VizThink NYC – Visual Thinking (on the back of a napkin)

May 3, 2010 – 6:17 pm

VizThinkEventWant to brainstorm, solve problems, and communicate ideas more effectively using pictures?  Sure you do…!

Join us on Weds, May 19 at 6:30pm for a fun and interactive exploration of visual thinking and problem-solving based on the revolutionary work of Dan Roam.  The event is free, no experience necessary, and we’ll even supply the napkins!

In his groundbreaking book, “The Back of the Napkin,” Dan brought visual problem-solving (made-simple) to the masses.  If you’re not familiar with his work (or even if you already are), we highly recommend checking out his website which contains a generous assortment of information, tools, and resources:  http://www.thebackofthenapkin.com

(*Note:  While our VizThink NYC event will be touching just the tip of the iceberg of his work, you might be interested to know that Dan Roam will be delivering his 2-day workshop right here in NYC in September.  You can find details of Dan’s training conference here … http://www.thebackofthenapkin.com/events/)

Back to our VizThink NYC event…

Facilitated by our VizThink NYC team, we’ll discuss some of the key tools from “The Back of the Napkin,” and together explore how we can apply them in the real world.

Also, our following (follow-up) event in June will be a discussion of Dan’s accompanying hands-on workbook “Unfolding the Napkin,” so you may want to pick up a copy of his books and dig in…!

Please RSVP here asap for our fun and informative VizThink NYC event, as seating is limited and we expect a full house.  Please RSVP with your full name in order to get into the building.

Also, we ask that you please be considerate of your fellow VizThinkers and sign up ONLY if you’ll be able to make it.  We’d hate to have an empty seat while someone else is sitting at home napkinless.

Vizthink NYC Pictionary Showdown

August 21, 2009 – 2:15 am

Much fun was had by all at our first VizThink NYC Pictionary Showdown last Weds.  Thanks to everyone for coming down…!  And much thanks to Heather Willems, Martha Denton, and Nora Herting for organizing a fantastic event.

In spite of the fact that the entire Pictionary event was played under protest by me (ok, not really), it was a great competition and lots of fun.  So much fun, in fact, that I forgot to take lots of photos (just a few).

Aside from the fun, there were several important lessons learned:

  • Some great artists occasionally have trouble drawing.
  • Some “non-artists” draw fairly well.
  • No one should ever have to draw a visual representation of “Totalitarianism.”
  • Make sure your event organizers are sober when they plan a Pictionary event.

And stay tuned for info about our upcoming VizThink NYC workshop in September…!

(Overdue) Post-game for VizThink NYC Kick-Off event…!

June 23, 2009 – 2:49 am

Thanks to everyone who came down last Wednesday to make our VizThink NYC Kick-Off a great one…!  Lots of good insight and great conversation about various aspects of visual thinking and communication.  Great energy and lots of fun…!

First we talked about the power of the visual image, and how it helped to promote conversation, communication, and connection with other people.

Then Dean Meyers did a fantastic job of taking us through a visual problem-solving speed-fest using 5 different visual models in 15 minutes.  Now we know how much effort goes into figuring out what to eat for breakfast…!  Then we explored our own processes using these visual tools.  Great stuff… in fact, we’ll devote one of our future events to visual problem-solving with these various methods.

Heather Willems was cool enough to share her time and her excellent graphic recording skills to create an amazing visual representation of our event.  Awesome stuff…!

Check out our Flickr photostream to see Heather’s graphic recording and lots of pics from the event… http://www.flickr.com/groups/1169352@N22/

You can also take a look at the PowerPoint presentation, although it might not make as much sense without the discussion… http://www.slideshare.net/Cherches/vizthink-nyc-kickoff-slideshare-version-1605644

Looking forward to our next event… with our guest presenters from Humantific (www.humantific.com)…!

Please feel free to provide feedback about the event, or feedforward about future events… and thanks to all for a great night…!

***Much thanks to MJ Broadbent, Liquidnet, and Liquidnet University for providing a fantastic venue for the event.  And thanks to our team of organizers for planning and organizing an excellent event: Ray DeLaPena, Michael Babwahsingh, and Evan Dody (who photographed and videotaped the event)…!
